The spread between the cheapest and most expensive gaming chain widened again in the week of August 31–September 6, 2026: the same 50-transactions-a-day workload costs $0.00 on Ronin or Immutable, $31.50 on Polygon, $1,108.14 on TRON at mid-market rental rates, and $4,260.00 on Ethereum — and the cross-chain weighted average settled at $0.1001 per transaction.

This is the number this site exists to publish. Every figure below is the cost of one standard in-game transaction — a token transfer, a claim, a marketplace listing — on each chain we track, snapshot taken Wednesday, September 2, 2026.

The weighted average is dominated by transaction volume, not by the extremes. Ronin and Immutable alone carry 1,796,700 of the 3,756,700 daily transactions we model — 47.8% of all game transactions happen on chains that charge nothing for them. The expensive tail (TRON, Ethereum) carries 7.1% of transactions but skews the simple average badly if you forget to weight it. Where the players actually sit relative to these prices is this week's intelligence briefing.

Put another way: at each chain's own price, the whole sector's daily transaction volume converts into a daily aggregate bill that is remarkably concentrated at the bottom of the price ladder:

What changed this week

Three movements mattered between August 31 and September 6, 2026:

  1. The TRON fee stack is cheaper than most guides print. On-chain receipts measured on Tuesday, September 1 confirmed energy at 100 sun per unit (proposal 104, effective Aug 29, 2025) — burning a standard 64,285-energy USDT transfer costs $2.17, and the rental market sampled during the window spanned 22–74 SUN, with the mid band at 34 SUN = $0.7388.
  2. Ethereum L1 game costs held near $2.84, leaving the most expensive venue roughly 28.4× the sector average — and its game activity fell the fastest of any chain (−10.4% DAU).
  3. Base and Solana, the two gainers, are also among the five cheapest chains in the set. Cheaper infrastructure and player growth showed up in the same week, in the same direction. The full nine-chain scorecard behind those moves, including the four-week trend, is in our weekly data report.

The rental band moved inside a fee schedule that has itself been cut twice. Real unit-price history, all verifiable from chain parameters:

What "free" doesn't cover

A $0.00 gas line is not a $0.00 month, and the difference matters more the cheaper the chain gets. Four costs live entirely outside the transaction layer, and none of them appears in a gas dashboard:

  • Bridging in. Getting value onto Ronin or Immutable means paying the origin chain's gas plus a bridge fee before the first game action. A $100 deposit routed from Ethereum costs roughly $3.20 — 3.2% of the deposit gone at the door.
  • Marketplace fees. Game marketplaces typically take 2–5% of sale value plus creator royalties. A player trading $400 of items in a month at a 3% take rate pays about $12 — more than a full month of Grinder-level gas on Polygon, on a chain where gas itself is free.
  • Withdrawals. Cashing out carries a fixed cost per trip. Four monthly withdrawals at about $2.50 each is $10, regardless of how cheap in-game play was.
  • Token spread. Converting rewards to a stablecoin usually costs 0.5–2% in spread and slippage — about $1.80 on $180 of monthly rewards, worse on thin books, which free-gas chains tend to host.

For a 50-transactions-a-day player these four lines add roughly $27 a month — real money, but still far below any paid chain's bill at the same intensity. The honest summary is directional: going gas-free moves a player's cost from a meter to a menu, and the menu items reward batching. TRON in detail: rent, stake or burn

TRON gets its own section because its pricing has three states, and players who confuse them overpay by a factor of 2.9 at the mid band — more at the cheap end of the rental market.

The rental market itself had depth this week: the aggregator's cheapest listed 65,000-energy 1-hour rental printed 22 SUN, listed providers spanned 22–38 SUN, and indicative market pricing ran 26–74 SUN against the 100 SUN burn price. Even the most expensive sampled rental ($1.61) is 26% cheaper than burning.

Four player types, four monthly bills

Three readings worth pausing on:

  1. The TRON burn column is a leak, not a strategy. A Studio burning TRX at 500 tx/day spends $32,592.50 a month for the identical workload that costs $11,081.45 rented — a 2.9× penalty for skipping one setup step.   2. Gas-free chains change studio unit economics entirely. On Ronin or Immutable, the marginal cost of one more account, one more transaction, one more grind hour is zero — which is exactly why 44.6% of GameFi players sit there.
  3. Ethereum prices out everyone but the highest-value actions. At $2.84 per transaction, only settlement-sized operations (large NFT sales, bridge deposits) justify L1 execution; game logic belongs on L2s, and the data says players have already voted — Ethereum's 2.7% DAU share is the smallest in our set.

The new-address penalty (TRON only)

One chain-specific cost most onboarding funnels miss: on TRON, a transfer to a never-before-used address consumes 130,285 energy instead of 64,285 — a 2.03× "fresh-address tax."

For a guild onboarding 100 new wallets a week with a 10-USDT seed transfer each, that is an extra $74 of pure onboarding cost versus seeding already-active addresses — invisible in any yield model, paid every single week. On gas-free chains this penalty is zero.

GasFree and the stablecoin exception

TRON's GasFree feature (held at its $1.00-per-transfer ceiling as of Friday, September 4, 2026) lets supported wallets pay stablecoin transfer fees in the token itself. For simple USDT moves it is a reasonable default. It does not execute game contracts, so it does not remove the energy decision for anyone who actually plays — it only narrows the gap for players who mostly move value rather than interact.

What would change this picture

  • Ethereum gas below $1.50 would cut its premium from 28.4× to roughly 15× — still expensive, but no longer disqualifying for mid-intensity players.
  • TRON mid-market rate below 30 SUN would put a standard transfer under $0.66 and narrow the gap to BNB Chain to under 7×.
  • A Ronin or Immutable fee introduction would be the sector event of the quarter: 44.6% of players and 47.8% of transactions currently pay nothing, and even a $0.01 charge would create a $539,000-per-month cost pool from nothing.
  • Base or Solana reversal — both grew this week; if that reverses, the "migration to cheap chains" narrative loses its evidence. The events we could attribute inside the window are listed in the week's news review.
